Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, weakened into a deep depression on Sunday, but heavy rains and floods continued to pound several parts of the state and union territory.

According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal has weakened into a deep depression. It is likely to move westwards very slowly and weaken gradually into a depression over north Tamil Nadu during the next few hours.

The cyclonic storm Fengal is expected to intensify as it moves towards the Arabian Sea, passing over northern Kerala and Karnataka by December 3, the IMD said

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning of significant rainfall in Kerala due to cyclone Fengal. Heavy rain is expected in northern and central parts of the state on Tuesday. Red alerts are issued for five northern districts.

The death toll from Cyclone Fengal's fierce push through Sri Lanka and southern India reached 20 on Monday as downpours and flooding followed the storm's wake after its winds calmed.Roads were flooded and schools were shut in parts of southern India with weather officials on Monday warning that there remained a risk of flash flooding.

NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Cyclone Fengal killed at least 19 people in India and Sri Lanka and caused flooding in Tamil Nadu state and the Puducherry region after crossing India's southern coast from the Bay of Bengal on Saturday.

Cyclone Fengal weakened after making landfall near Puducherry on Saturday, causing unprecedented rainfall and significant damage. Over 19 fatalities were reported in India and Sri Lanka, and extensive evacuations were conducted.
