Minnesota state Senator Omar Fateh announced Monday that he will run for Minneapolis mayor in 2025 against Jacob Frey.

Omar Fateh, the first Somali American elected to the Minnesota Senate, said he will run for mayor in the November 2025 elections.

The first Somali elected to the Minnesota Senate is now seeking to lead the states largest city. Sen. Omar Fateh announced Monday he will challenge incumbent, and fellow DFLer Jacob Frey for the mayor’s office.

Fateh announced his mayoral bid Monday, saying: "Minneapolis must be a north star for our nation in a dark time."

Fateh, 34, became the first Somali American and first Muslim to serve in the Senate when he was first elected in 2020.

At a press conference Monday, the south Minneapolis Democrat hammered at incumbent Jacob Frey's alleged failures and promised to help those struggling to get by.
