With Capitals forward Tom Wilson serving double-minor for high-sticking Macklin Celebrini, Eklund took a pass from Mikael Granlund and one-timed a shot that got past Capitals goalie Logan Thompson.

The Capitals’ clash Tuesday night against San Jose had all the makings of a trap game — Washington was riding a four-game winning streak that had featured high-octane offense every night while the upstart visitors had shaken off a poor start to play inspired hockey for more than a month.
