A ceasefire has come into effect between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon after a deal was agreed to end 13 months of fighting. In October 2023, Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel in support of its ally Hamas in Gaza and Israel launched retaliatory air strikes in Lebanon.

A ceasefire deal agreed to by Lebanon and Israel expands the area expected to be free of Hezbollah's arms and spells out the Lebanese security forces entitled to carry weapons, sharpening language from prior U.

Israel's military opened fire Thursday morning in southern Lebanon, a day after reaching a cease-fire agreement in the area with the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group.

Israel said on Thursday that its ceasefire with Hezbollah was breached hours after Lebanese security sources said Israeli tanks attacked six areas of southern Lebanon, calling into question a truce reached after more than a year of fighting.

The Lebanese army said Israel violated the cease-fire agreement, while the IDF said it was responding to violations by Hezbollah.
