Elon Musk has shared his own disbelief that the government efficiency department Donald Trump tapped him to lead “is real.” The world’s richest man and SpaceX owner, who holds billions of dollars in government contracts through his companies, appeared to mock the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in a post on X.

The role is not certain but likely, Axios reports. The appointee would be responsible for keeping America's AI edge and improving government efficiency, among other tasks.

Trump made the announcement on social media, fulfilling a campaign promise to give Musk sweeping oversight of federal spending.

Musk—the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and owner of X (formerly Twitter)—was quoted in Trump's announcement as saying that DOGE "will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!"
